We want to stop the privatisation of local public services. Contracting out services damages services, users and staff and threatens independence, which makes it more difficult for people to get what they need in their own communities.
The New Labour government undermined the autonomy of local voluntary organisations through commissioning and central government targets. The pressure has increased with the current government’s funding cuts that take support away from poor or vulnerable people and privilege rich people. The cuts are a political choice, not an inevitability.
‘Localism’ and ‘big society’ plans will increase government control, erode accountability and equality and make it more difficult for communities to thrive.
It is a vision of society in which public services are not a matter for the state, but operate to make profit. Where this is impossible people are expected to provide the service for free.
